Excel: Protect individual cells
With the sheet protection you can protect an entire Excel spreadsheet. But what should you do if you only want to write-protect individual cells with certain amounts or formulas? Here we help you.
1. Remove general cell protection
First you have to remove the protection for all cells, then you define the cells that you want to protect.
- Select the whole table by clicking on the corner of the labels at the top left.
- Click "Format" at the top, then "Cells".
- Click the "Protection" tab.
- Remove the check mark at "Locked" and click on "OK".
2. Protect individual cells
2. Select the cell to be protected or the corresponding cell range. Execute the "Format | Cells" command again and activate the "Locked" option for the selected cells in the "Protection" tab. Then click on "OK".
- Now mark the cells you want to protect from editing.
- Click "Format" again, then "Cells".
- In the "Protection" tab, check the "Locked" box again.
- Confirm with OK".
3. Activate leaf protection for individual cells
- Click on "Tools" -> "Protection" -> "Protect Sheet" above.
- Enter a password and remember it well! Confirm with OK".
- In the next window you have to enter the password again and confirm again with "OK".
The marked cells should now be protected as long as you do not enter the corresponding password.
By the way, Excel is also particularly suitable for creating a logbook. You can find good templates for this here.
