Excel: multiply and divide by formula
In Excel, you can also easily multiply and divide using a formula. This practical tip shows you how to do this.
Multiply in Excel
Below we show you how to multiply in Excel:
- Method 1: Jump into a cell and enter an equal sign to start a formula.
- Now enter the first number, followed by an asterisk, which is used as a multiplier in Excel. Complete the entry with the second number (or more) and confirm with [Enter].
- Example: "= 50 * 10 * 5". Result: 2500.
- Method 2: Alternatively, you can multiply the cell references.
- To do this, first enter the values to be multiplied in different cells. For example, write your first value in cell C1 and your second value in cell C2. Now switch to another cell in which you want to output the result.
- There you have to start again with an equal sign and then enter the cell with the first number (eg C1) followed by the star symbol. By entering the second (or more) cells (eg C2) and pressing [Enter], you complete the formula and the result is displayed.
- Example: "= C1 * C2".
Divide in Excel
Dividing works almost identical to multiplying in Excel:
- Method 1: Click in any free cell and enter an equal sign followed by the first number and a forward slash (/), which stands for dividing in Excel.
- Complete the formula by entering the second or last number and confirm with [Enter]. You get the result in the same cell.
- Option 2: You can also enter the numbers of the respective cells here. For example, enter 30 in C1 and 10 in cell C2. In any free cell, start again with the equal sign and then the name of the first cell; in our example "C1".
- With a slash you indicate again that you want to divide and then enter the name of the second cell (in our example "C2"). Confirm with [Enter].
- Excel outputs the result in the cell in which you specified this formula.
