Excel not saved - how to restore?
If you have not saved a workbook in Excel, you can usually restore it. All you have to do is be quick, don't open a new workbook and search in the right folder. We'll show you where to find the Excel spreadsheet.
Excel: Requirements for restoring
You can easily restore workbooks when automatic backup is active. This is automatically activated in the newer versions of Office.
- Click on "File" or the Office icon at the top left and select "Options" or "Excel Options".
- The "Save AutoRecover information" option must be activated under "Save".
- Reduce the save interval in the "Minutes" field, for example to 5 or 3. This will save changes automatically more often.
Excel: restore workbook
You can restore changes as well as entire workbooks in Excel:
- Start Excel and click on "File" or on the Office icon at the top left and select "Last opened". Under Office 2013 you will find the item under "Open".
- Then click "Restore Unsaved Workbooks".
- Select your file here and click "Open".
Tip: Fish the Excel folder from the temporary folder
With a little luck, the file is still in the temporary folder:
- Go to the following folder path: C: \ Users \ USERNAME \ AppData \ Local \ Microsoft \ Office \ UnsavedFiles
- If there is an Excel file here, you can open it with a double click.
- Alternatively, click on "File"> "Open" in Excel and click on the button "Restore unsaved workbooks" at the bottom.
