Excel: insert numbering - how it works
Unlike in Word, Excel does not have a numbering function. We show you how to insert a list in our practical tip.
Numbering in Excel: Insert a column or row with a series of numbers
The fastest way to create a number is in a separate column or row. To do this, manually define the first two numbers in the corresponding cells, Excel then automatically adds the series of numbers:
- Enter the first numbers of the desired numbering in the first two cells. For example: "1.", "2." or "001", "002"
- Now mark the two cells with the mouse.
- Next, use the fill-in function: Click on the small black square in the lower right corner of the last cell and drag the area as far as you want.
Numbering in Excel: Insert the "ROW" function
Alternatively, you can number your document using the "LINE" function:
- Enter the code "= ROW (A1)" in the first cell of the numbering. The value 1 is thus output.
- Drag the cell with the black square as above into the area you want to fill.
- To carry out any other numbering, use the "LINE" function in combination with "TEXT": How to start numbering with "= TEXT (LINE (A1);" 000-000 ")", for example at 000-001.
