With placeholders in Excel, only part of a cell's content can be checked. For example, you can count all cells in a range whose content begins with a specific letter. In this article we will show you how to use placeholders in Excel.
Use placeholders in Excel
- The asterisk (*) acts as a placeholder in Excel.
- If you enter an asterisk in an exam, it means any content.
- For example, the function "= COUNTIF (A1: A5;" R * ")" counts all cells between A1 and A5 whose content begins with an R.
- The function "= COUNTIF (A1: A5;" * R ")" counts all cells between A1 and A5 whose content ends with R.
- With the function "= COUNTIF (A1: A5;" * R * ")" you count all cells between A1 and A5 in which an R occurs.
