Excel: Convert the time to hours - how it works
In Excel you can format cells as time and calculate with the times entered. To convert the time to hours, you need to do a trick. For example, you can calculate the difference between two times in hours. We'll show you how it works.
Excel: Convert time to hours
If you enter a time in a cell in Excel, Excel automatically recognizes this and formats the cell accordingly. With a right click on the cell, you can use the "Format cell" command to adapt the display to your requirements. You can calculate the times and convert them to hours:
- To convert a time, for example in cell A1, into hours, enter the following formula: "= A1 * 24". The result is the number of hours that have passed from midnight, i.e. 0:00 a.m., to the specified time.
- For example, you can calculate the difference between two times in hours. To specify the number of hours between a time in cell A1 and a time in cell A2, enter the formula "= (A2-A1) * 24".
- For example, you can easily calculate the working hours for each day. If necessary, you can enter a break time in cell C1 that should not be included in the calculation. The formula is then: "= (A2-A1-C1) * 24"
