Excel: Swap cell contents
You cannot swap two cell contents directly in Microsoft Excel. However, there is an alternative that allows you to move content without the clipboard. We will show you how to do this here.
Swap and move cells in Microsoft Excel
If you want to swap cell 1 and cell 2, you can copy a cell 1 into any other empty cell 3. Then copy cell 2 into cell 1 and the contents of cell 3 into cell 2. But with a little trick it is quicker and easier.
- Open the desired document in Microsoft Excel.
- Move the mouse to the edge of a cell until you see four small arrows instead of the big "plus".
- Then press and hold [Shift] and the left mouse button.
- With the buttons held down, drag the cell to the desired position. It then appears between two cells. This allows a cell to be inserted between two existing cells without losing content.
- You can move the other cell in the same way. With just 2 actions, you exchanged two cell contents.
