Set up Exchange Server - how it works
Before you can use Exchange, you must first set up a server. In this practical tip you will learn exactly how to do this.
Install Exchange Server - this is how you proceed
Start by installing the server. Note: These instructions are independent of a special Exchange version and therefore universally applicable.
- You need this file from Microsoft for the installation. Download and run it.
- Select the option "Connect to the Internet and check for updates" and click "Next".
- Wait until the necessary updates have been downloaded and continue with "Next".
- In the next step you have to agree to the license terms and confirm them with "Next".
- Then select "Use recommended settings", mark the "Mailbox role" and "Install Windows server roles and features required for installing Exchange Server automatically" and select the storage space of the server.
- Alternatively, you can define a name for the organization. Continue with "Next" until you can click "Install". Now wait for the installation to finish.
Add email domain to Exchange
After you have successfully installed the server, you now have to add the email domains:
- To do this, call up the address "// localhost / ecp" in your web browser.
- Select "Message Flow" and then "Accepted Domain". Then click on the "+" symbol.
- Enter a name in the "Name" field and the respective domain under "Accepted domain".
- At the bottom you have to select the function of the respective domain and add it with "Save".
- To set a domain as the default, click on the pencil icon and check "Use this domain as the default domain". Click "Save" again to apply.
Exchange Server: Set Send Connector
So that you can also send e-mails from the network, you have to set the so-called Send connector:
- To do this, call up the administration console by entering "// SERVERNAME / ecp" in your web browser. Replace "SERVERNAME" with the previously defined name.
- Under "Message flow" select the entry "Send connector" and click here on the "+" symbol.
- Enter a name in the "Name" field and select "Internet". Click "Next" to continue.
- In the next step, select the option "MX record connected to the recipient domain" and click "Next" again.
- Here you must click on the "+" and enter an asterisk (*) under "Fully qualified domain name (FQDN)". Then confirm your selection by clicking on "Save".
- Click on "Finish" to complete the creation of the Send connector.
Set storage space at the Exchange Server
In this step you now have to define the storage locations of the users:
- To do this, click on "Server" in the administration console and then on "Databases". Mark the database here and click on the pencil icon.
- You can then enter the desired values under "Limit values".
- With "Save" the values are accepted and are valid immediately.
Exchange: create mailboxes for the server
Here we show you how you can create additional mailboxes for new users:
- To do this, click on "Mailboxes" under "Recipients" in the administration console and then on the "+" symbol. Then select "User mailbox" here.
- In the next step you have to fill out the form for the new user completely.
- In addition, here you assign a user name and a password for the new user.
- With a click on the "Save" button, the changes are accepted and the user can log in with his data.
