Face ID has stopped working. You can do that
If Face ID no longer works on your iPhone or iPad, this can have various causes. We show you tips on how to get Face ID up and running again on your own.
Face ID has stopped working. It could be because of it
It is best to go through the following points in order. In this way, you can gradually rule out various causes of Face ID no longer working.
- Keep the camera free: First, make sure that the special "TrueDepth camera" of your device is not covered by anything. Also make sure that no dirt or the like interferes with the camera function.
- Do not cover face: Make sure your face is not covered. Note: Some sunglasses block the infrared waves that the camera can use to clearly recognize your face.
- The correct position: Use your iPhone in portrait format so that Face ID can easily capture your face. Also make sure that the distance between the camera and your face is between 25 and 50 cm. This distance corresponds to an arm length.
- If you want to use Face ID on your iPad, you can use it in portrait or landscape format. Again, the distance between the device and your face should not be more than an arm's length.
- Carry out iOS updates: Check whether updates for the iOS operating system are available on your iPhone or iPad. If so, update the operating system to the latest iOS version.
- Check settings: Go to "Settings" in the sub-category "Face ID & Code" on your device. Check whether Face ID is activated for your desired functions. Adjust the settings if necessary.
Configure an "alternative appearance" - how it works
If you have changed your appearance significantly, Face ID may not be able to recognize your face. In this case, create an alternative appearance.
- Under "Settings" tap on the "Face ID & Code" submenu.
- Scroll down on your screen and press “Configure alternative appearance”.
- Look into the camera from the front so that your face fills the frame on the screen.
- Slowly move your head in a circle as described on the screen.
- Then press "Next" and take your iPhone or iPad in the other hand.
- Move your head in a circle again as directed.
- When you're finished, tap Done.
If nothing works anymore: Reset Face ID
Reset Face ID if the feature still doesn't work despite the tips above. You can then reconfigure Face ID.
- Go to "Face ID & Code" in the menu under "Settings". Scroll down a bit on your screen and select "Reset Face ID".
- Then press "Configure Face ID" to switch the function back on and adjust it.
- Important: If Face ID still does not work after the reset, the TrueDepth camera may be damaged. In this case, contact Apple Support and, if necessary, have your device repaired.
