Facebook app: how to protect your privacy
On Facebook you should always protect your privacy with the right settings. In this practical tip, we explain how this works in the Facebook app for iOS.
Open privacy settings in the Facebook app
- Click on the menu button at the bottom right. This consists of the three horizontal lines on top of each other.
- If you scroll down a bit, you will find the "Privacy settings" there.
- Here you will find the following three categories: who can see my content, who can contact me and how can I prevent someone from bothering me?
Who can see my Content?
If you select this point, you have two setting options.
- Who can see my future posts? Here you can choose who can see your posts on Facebook. Choose between the options "Public", "Friends", "Only me" or one of your lists. However, you can also adjust this option again for each post. To protect your privacy, you should avoid the "Public" option. If you continue to create friend lists, you can also exclude certain people from the audience.
- The second point gives you access to your activity log. There you have an overview of all your likes, comments, postings and other messages that you can hide or delete afterwards. So you can also remove one or the other forgotten and embarrassing comment later.
Who can contact me
- Messages: With this option you should activate the "Basic filtering" so that you can also contact people with whom you are not yet friends. "Strict filtering" isolates yourself from strangers so that only people who are already friends can contact you.
- Friendship requests: Again, you can decide which groups can send you a request. You can choose between "All" and "Friends of friends". If you can see your profile, you should also allow them to send you a friend request. If a friend has just registered on Facebook, they first have to find other friends of yours to contact you. Here you can relax the rules a little, unless you already have all your friends on Facebook together.
How do I prevent someone from bothering me?
Under this point you can block certain users. Simply enter the person's name or email address. It doesn't matter whether you have the person on the friend list or not. Your profile will then no longer be able to see them and will therefore not be able to contact you.
