Facebook Messenger: What does "Now Active" mean?

• The status "Now active" is always displayed in Facebook Messenger when you are connected to the Facebook servers.
• You don't necessarily have to be chatting with someone. You are "active" if you are somehow on Facebook. The status also applies if, for example, you only look at your own timeline or visit friends' profiles.
• If the app is only running in the background, however, the status "Now active" is not displayed. In this case and even if you have logged out of Facebook, the status "active x minutes / hours / days ago" appears. This status roughly corresponds to the "last online" ad on WhatsApp.
