Facebook: Turn off personalized advertising - how it works
Facebook knows your interests and uses them to show you personalized advertising. Recently Facebook wants to show this advertisement not only on its own homepage but also on other websites - one more reason to switch off the personalized ads.
Facebook: How to turn off personalized advertising
- Navigate to the settings on Facebook using the arrow at the top right. In the left column you will find the item "Ads".
- In the first three sub-items you can select your preferences. For maximum data protection, select "Edit" and then "No", "No" and "Nobody".
- With these settings you have already done the roughest thing: You should no longer see personalized advertising via the Facebook Advertising Network - neither on Facebook itself nor on other websites.
- If you really want to be sure, you can also delete your interests collected by Facebook. In the fourth subsection "Ads based on my settings" click on "edit" and select "Go to settings for ads".
- Here, Facebook lists all the topics that are considered relevant to you based on your profile and your activity and are suitable for personalized ads. Move your mouse over a topic and click the "X" on the right to delete it manually.
- Facebook continues to record your interests and re-register them. So you need to remove the topics again from time to time.
- In principle, other advertising providers can continue to record your preferences in various ways (e.g. your Google search queries) and use them for targeted browser advertising. To prevent this, you should clear the cache regularly.
