Set up Facetime - Here's how
With FaceTime you can make video calls to other Apple users. Setting up the app on iPhone, iPad and Mac or MacBook works as follows.
- Open the "Settings" app, go to "FaceTime" and activate it using the slide switch at the top.
- Enter your Apple ID (email address and password) in the field below and log in with a click on "Register".
- You can then enter all email addresses under which you want to be reachable via "FaceTime". You can also select your cell phone number as a FaceTime address and specify which address you want to use as the caller ID.
- The setup works analogously on the iPad. However, you cannot select a phone number here.
How to activate FaceTime on MacBook
As of Mac OS X Lion, "FaceTime" is already preinstalled. You can also make video calls on a Mac with the Snow Leopard operating system. You can download the program here. Setup is also lightning fast on Mac:
- Open the "FaceTime" application on your Mac and click on "FaceTime" -> "Settings" in the menu bar.
- Activate video telephony using the slide switch.
- Add all the email addresses you want to use and enter your mobile number if you wish. You also select which of the specified addresses should be used as the caller ID.
Note: "FaceTime" can also be used from iOS 6 via a 3G connection. However, the amount of data transferred is very large and can use up your data volume within a very short time. The examples above refer to an iPhone 5 and iPad 2 with iOS 6.1.2 or a MacBook Air 13-inch, Mid 2012 under OS X 10.8.3
