Bicycle pedals can wear out over time and should then be replaced. You don't have to go to a workshop, you can easily change your bike pedals yourself with little effort and with just a few tools.
Change bicycle pedals: dismantling the old pedals
To start changing, first remove your old bicycle pedals. You normally need a 15 mm open-end wrench.
- Unscrew your pedals with the spanner in the direction of the rear wheel. To do this, place the tool between the crank and the pedal.
- You have to unscrew the left pedal clockwise and the right one counter-clockwise.
- In some cases, pedals are fixed using Allen screws. These can be released with an Allen key at the end of the pedals.
- If the screw connection is stuck, rust is often the cause after long use. To solve this, spray on some rust remover and let it work for about 10 minutes.
Mount new bicycle pedals: you should pay attention to this
Before mounting, make sure that the pedals are assigned correctly. These are marked "Right" and "Left" and should only be installed in this way.
- To prevent rust, we recommend that you grease the threads of the new pedals thoroughly.
- The grease keeps the thread supple and prevents water from entering.
- First screw in the pedals by hand in the direction of the front wheel.
- Then tighten the screw connection using the open-end or Allen key.
- Retighten the screws after you have cycled a few kilometers.
