Cleaning the bicycle chain: how it works
Manufacturers recommend cleaning the bicycle chain every 300 to 400 kilometers. This prevents premature wear. We show you what you need for cleaning and how to do it.
Cleaning the bicycle chain: this is required
- Classic cleaning is possible with a spray oil like WD-40 or WD-40 Bike. However, the normal WD-40 is sufficient. One or two old rags are also needed.
- Alternatively, you can use a chain cleaning device. This promises a little more comfort, but costs a little more and then requires additional cleaning.
Instructions: Clean the bicycle chain properly
- If you work with the chain cleaning device, you just have to insert the chain into the device. Turn the pedals and run the chain several times. Wash the device briefly and then start a second run.
- Use WD-40, spray an old rag or an old T-shirt in one place. Place the rag around the chain and turn the pedal. If the entire chain is supplied with WD-40, perform the cleaning with a clean part of the rag. Change the place from time to time so that all dirt is removed.
- If there is nothing left in the rag, wait a few minutes. The WD-40 has now lowered. Now do one last pass with a clean rag.
Lubricate the chain after cleaning
- After cleaning, you must lubricate the chain again. You can use chain oil or chain oil for spraying.
- Apply the chain oil to the inside of the chain. If you use chain wax, apply it to the outside.
