Color change when crocheting - how it works
If you crochet blankets, upholstery or cuddly toys, a color change is often necessary. It is important that the transition from one color to another is as inconspicuous as possible.
Tips for crocheting with changing colors
Try the color change on single crochet. You can apply the technique to all types of stitches. If you are no longer sure how to make a single crochet, read our crochet guide for beginners.
- The different colors should have the same quality and strength in the wool.
- There are two ways to deal with the thread of the old color. You can cut it off and sew it up afterwards. This is useful if you don't need the old color at all, or if you don't need it for a long time.
- If you only have to bridge a few stitches, let the thread run behind the work. Make sure that the thread is nice and loose. Otherwise the work will stretch later.

Get the thread for the last stitch in the old color from the ball of the new color.
The next row starts seamlessly in the new color.
- If your crochet is in rows, change the color at the end of the last row of the old color.
- Crochet the row to the last single crochet.
- Get the thread to pull through the new color and pull it through the last single crochet with the crochet hook.
- Turn work. The spiral air mesh of the new series is already in the new color. The reverse air mesh replaces the first single crochet in the next row.
Change color when crocheting in rounds
If your work is crocheted in rounds, change color at the end of the round, similar to changing colors in rows.
- Work until the end of the round until only the slip stitch used to close the round is missing.
- Crochet the slip stitch in the old color and make the chain stitch of the first round in the new color.
- Alternatively, you can already pull the thread of the chain stitch in the new color. Important: pull the thread of the old color tightly until the new color is only visible on the needle.
