Fast food classics: Big Mac and Whopper in comparison
The Big Mac and Whopper from Hamburg are among the most popular fast food products. If you compare the two flagships from McDonalds and Burger King, there are many parallels. But the burgers are not exactly the same.
Big Mac and Whopper in comparison: This is what the McDonalds burger is made of
The BigMac is probably the most famous hamburger in the world. In 1968, fast food was sold for the first time in double-deck format - of course in the USA. Since then, the Big Mac has spread worldwide and is sold in countless countries.
- Due to McDonalds' exact standards, every Bic Mac contains the same amount of ingredients. The burger weighs around 220 grams.
- The ingredients are basically not unusual: in addition to the bread roll and two slices of beef, there are onions, pickles, iceberg lettuce, cheddar cheese and the company's own Big Mac sauce on the burger.
- There are slight variations for individual countries, such as India, because beef is not allowed there. The counterpart to the Big Mac is called Chicken Maharaja Mac and is prepared with chicken.
- McDonalds gives the nutritional value of the Big Mac at 503 kcal - 232 kcal per 100 g.
- The Big Mac received exceptional attention in the 1980s when the English magazine The Economist first published the so-called Bic-Mac index.
- This examines the purchasing power of different currencies in the respective countries and thus determines whether a currency is over- or undervalued. To do this, the average price of the Big Mac in the country is calculated and offset against the real exchange rate.
- Particularly characteristic of the hamburger: the bun not only consists of the underside and lid, but also an intermediate piece in the middle.
- The typical price for a Big Mac in Germany is currently 4.29 euros.
Tradition since the 1950s: The Whopper from Burger King
The Whopper is probably the most important product in the fast food chain Burger King. The burger started selling in the United States in 1957, making it over 10 years older than the Big Mac.
- In contrast to the Big Mac, the Whopper weighs around 275 grams. The proportion of beef is 113.4 grams - exactly a quarter of a pound.
- The list of ingredients does not hold any major surprises for the whopper either: in addition to the sesame roll and a slice of beef, onions, lettuce, cucumber and tomato slices are included. Cheese, ketchup and mayo are also added to the burger.
- Burger King also sells the Whopper in various variations. The Dopple Whopper contains an additional slice of meat, while the Whopper Jr. is a reduced format for the small hunger.
- Burger King temporarily offers the Angry Whopper with roasted onions and jalapeños.
- The nutritional value of a classic whopper is 613 kcal. This means the burger has only 214 kcal per 100 g, where the Big Mac has 232 kcal.
- The price of the burger is on a similar level to its competitor: You have to pay 4.39 euros for the whopper in most Burger King restaurants.
The delicious product images and good taste shouldn't hide one thing: the burgers are pretty unhealthy. In the next article, you can read what the most unhealthy products from the fast food chains Burger King, McDonald's, Subway are.
