From a certain number of running applications Windows is on strike: The error message "Out of memory" appears if you want to run another tool. The task manager still shows sufficient physical memory and swap space. So what's the problem?
Reason for the Windows memory error message
The system cache, which is too small by default, is probably to blame, the "desktop heap" - Windows is once again making its history difficult here.
- Windows uses the heap to manage the open windows.
- If there are too many open, there are problems. The behavior can also be provoked: there is a shift in around 50 instances of Internet Explorer, Windows does not display any other windows, or it is disfigured.
- The size of the heap is defined in the registry, regardless of the main and hard disk space installed.
- Increase the value to be able to use more programs at the same time.
How to avoid the "Out of memory" error message
- Start the registry editor with "Start"> "Run", "regedit" and [Enter].
- In Windows 10, right-click on the Windows flag in the bottom left of the menu. Here you can select "Execute" to enter the registry editor by entering "regedit".
- Now go the following way by clicking on the respective entries: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ System \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Session Manager \ SubSystems".
- In the right pane, double-click the "Windows" entry. A long function call appears as a string.
- Find the "SharedSection" parameter in it. It determines the system and desktop heap in this format: SharedSection = xxxx, yyyy
- "Xxxx" stands for the maximum size of the system-wide heap and "yyyy" for the size of the heap per desktop, each in kilobytes. You only need to increase the value for the desktop by 256 or 512 KB, the annoying error messages are a thing of the past.
- Don't forget to restart your system afterwards so that the changes have the desired effect.
Replace memory latch
If the error message was not due to the heap, you can also replace the memory bars on your system.
- All you have to do is buy and install new RAM.
- Make sure that you buy enough RAM for your purposes. For simple office applications with occasional Windows games, we recommend at least 4GB. If you want to play challenging game titles, you shouldn't go below 12GB.
- We will explain in another practical tip how you can install the new or additional RAM bars.
Tip: You can also examine your RAM for problems. You can read how to do this in another practical tip. You can also empty your working memory in just a few steps.
