Watch TV on a PC with DVB-T - you need to know that
If you have no space for a large television or are looking for a cheaper solution, then television on the PC via DVB-T is an alternative. Here we show you what to look for when receiving via DVB-T.
What you should consider before buying a DVB-T receiver
For DVB-T television on the computer, you usually need additional hardware - but before you buy it, you should note the following things:
- DVB-T is a radio standard that is not yet sufficiently developed in all regions of Germany. Since you usually only get USB sticks with small antennas for the PC - and therefore poorer reception quality - your reception area should be adequately covered. You can find a map of the network expansion here, for example - pay attention to the keyword "indoor antenna". Outside of major cities and metropolitan areas, reception is still limited.
- With DVB-T you do not receive all channels that you know from cable TV or the satellite. Public service broadcasters and local broadcasters are particularly widespread. Most third-party programs such as "ProSieben" or "RTL" can also be received in the majority of the regions. But be careful: For example, the "RTL" group is planning to phase out the DVB-T network, and stations such as "RTL" or "VOX" may soon no longer be receivable.
- Your PC does not have to have extensive software or hardware requirements. Most systems work via USB stick, to which not only the antenna is connected, but also on which software is supplied. Installation usually starts automatically using AutoPlay. You also do not need a TV card.
Find the right DVB-T hardware for your PC
The question of the "right" antenna cannot be answered. If you search for "DVB-T Stick" on "Amazon" you will find over 1000 results, the prices of which start at around 20 euros.
- The function should always be similar, also pay attention to customer reviews.
- If you are not sure about the reception strength in your area, make sure that a more powerful DVB-T indoor antenna or even an external antenna can later be connected to your DVB-T stick - this would be the case with this model.
Set up TV reception on your computer
Depending on the product you have chosen, the user interface of the associated software looks different. However, the principles of the establishment are always the same:
- Insert the stick into a free USB port or insert a software CD that may be included. You quickly installed the reception program.
- If you have not yet done so, you will be asked to connect the antenna after starting the software.
- With a click on "station search" you start a scan which after a few minutes provides you with a list of all stations to be received in your area. You can change the order as you would on the television itself.
- Click on a program to start playback. Additional functions such as teletext are also available. With some programs you can even record.
- If you have installed the "Windows Media Center", for example, you can also configure TV reception here via your DVB-T antenna. Simply select "Digital" and finally "DVB-T" as the type of reception.
- If the supplied software of your model is of little use, you can switch to this helpful freeware or use the well-known "VLC Player".
By the way: You can also receive digital radio on a PC.
