Hard drive rattles loudly - what to do?
In this practical tip, we will tell you what the possible causes are and what you can do if your hard disk rattles loudly.
Possible causes of a rattling hard drive
- Obvious reason: Your hard drive is defective. It is often a broken read / write head. But don't panic! There is still a little hope that it is another problem:
- Your computer is overloaded and the working memory is full. In this case, the computer accesses space on the hard disk (virtual working memory). If you continue to execute commands, the unpleasant noise may occur.
- Your hard drive is overcrowded and / or the files are too "fragmented", i.e. too scattered over the hard drive. As a result, the computer takes longer to access files and may rattle the hard drive.
What you can do about chattering
- Back up your data as quickly as possible by creating a backup. It is best to mirror your hard drive completely. Because if the hard disk is actually defective, you can stop the service at any moment and then common data recovery tools can no longer help.
- If your files are scattered too much on your hard drive, defragmentation will help. This function is already integrated in Windows. However, you need at least 15 percent free space for this.
- If your working memory reaches its limits too quickly and needs to access the hard disk too often, an expansion of your working memory may help. This practical tip shows you how to optimize your working memory.
- If these tips do not fix the chatter, you should replace the hard drive after saving the data in a backup.
