Hard disk recorder - simply explained
The hard disk recorder is standard equipment in many households. In this practical tip we explain exactly what it is and how the devices work.
Hard disk recorder: functions simply explained
A hard disk recorder is a device that records TV content. The hard disk recorder is thus the modern variant of the video recorder, which records the TV program on tape.
- Hard disk recorders are commercially available as standalone devices for little money. The recorders are often integrated in televisions, TV receivers or BluRay players. Then the recorder is usually referred to as a PVR function (Personal Video Recorder).
- As with the classic video recorder, the hard disk recorder is also programmed. You do not have to laboriously enter the channel and time, but can usually select the desired program conveniently using the electronic program guide (EPG).
- The recorded content is stored digitally on a hard disk. With some recorders, you can expand the memory with external hard drives, USB sticks or memory cards. It is also possible to connect to a NAS or burn content to DVD.
- If a hard disk recorder is equipped with a twin tuner, this offers additional convenience. This allows you not only to watch TV programs while you are away, but also to record content while watching another program at the same time.
How much fits on a recorder?
- How much storage space a hard disk recorder offers depends primarily on the size of the hard disk. The technology used to compress and save the TV content is also relevant.
- If the input signal is in SD quality, about 1.5 to 3 GB of storage space is used per hour. HD quality is up to 5.4 GB per hour.
- Depending on the model and TV content, a 500 GB hard drive can sometimes be full faster or slower. For this reason, it is always worth taking a close look at the manufacturer's information.
