FIFA 13 tips & tricks: shoot penalties
In FIFA 13, too, you shoot penalties similar to the previous FIFA 12. These variants increase the likelihood of using an unsustainable shot:
- At the bottom left of the screen, a display swings between red and green. Try to get the display to stand in the middle of the green area by pressing the shot button (PS3: circle; Xbox360: B).
- Keep the shot button pressed briefly to determine the strength of the shot. Caution: The firmer you shoot, the more important it is that you have caught the shot indicator in the green area beforehand!
- Then use the left stick to indicate the direction of the shot. The longer you hold the stick in one direction, the more you shoot. This also increases the risk of shooting past.
- You can also lift the ball by pressing the left shoulder button or by pressing the shot button again (PS3: circle; Xbox360: B) to cut the ball. If you double-press the shot button, you will delay the shot.
- Tip: Penalties that are shot under the crossbar often land particularly well in the middle, as most opponents choose one of the corners. Even if the goalkeeper stops, he cannot parry a very firm shot.
FIFA 13 Tips & Tricks: Shot Methods
There are basically three different shooting techniques at FIFA 13:
- The normal shot: In order not to shoot over the goal with the normal shot (PS3: circle; Xbox360: B), you should always pay attention to the strength of the shot. In the penalty area you should charge the shot indicator up to a maximum of 45% of the shot power; about 50% is recommended outside the penalty area; for larger distances over 50%.
- The fired shot: To use this shot technique, you have to hold down the right shoulder button during the shot. The shooting power required varies depending on the player and the distance to the goal. Therefore it is recommended to practice in the arena in advance. To make the ball hit at an angle, it is best to aim the long post sharply when shooting.
- The lifter: To perform a lifter, hold down the left shoulder button during the shot. Strength and timing are crucial here. It is ideal if the goalkeeper is already at or in front of the five-meter line.
- The full-span shot: You can also shoot the ball full-span by holding the LT button (Xbox 360) or the L2 button (PS3).
FIFA 13 tips & tricks: quick throw-in
With a quick throw-in, you have two decisive advantages: The opponent is still unsorted, so you can quickly find yourself in an overpower situation. There is also no offside. Ideally, you will be given a clear path to the gate. To take a free kick quickly, run the next player straight to the ball in play. There are three types of throws:
- Short throw-in: To make a short throw-in, press the Y button (Xbox360) or the triangle button (PS3).
- The normal throw-in: To make a normal throw-in, press the A button (Xbox360) or the X button (PS3).
- Long throw: To make a long throw, press the X button (Xbox360) or the square button (PS3).
FIFA 13 tips & tricks: flanks
If you can't get through your opponent's lines of defense, a cross could be a good alternative. Depending on the strength of the flank (X button on Xbox360 or square button on PS3), it comes short or far into the box. There are a few tricks to help you make better use of flanks:
- Position your player in front of the defender in the penalty area so that he has enough space to put strength behind the header. You can control the whole thing with the LT button (Xbox 360) or the L2 button (PS3).
- You can regulate where the ball is going, not only by the edge strength: If the ball should come on the short post, press the edge key twice in quick succession (X key on Xbox360 or square key on PS3).
- If you want to fit the ball sharply and flat into the penalty area - about twice as fast as a normal pass - then press the flank button three times in quick succession. For example, you can reach your own players on the long post and only have to hold out your foot there.
FIFA 13 Tips & Tricks: Defense behavior in a free kick
Experienced FIFA gamers manage to score easy goals from promising positions - unless you make these situations difficult. There are the following options, especially for a free kick:
- Letting the wall jump: If you let your wall jump at the right moment, free kicks are easily deflected or blocked. On Xbox 360, you can do this by pressing the X button, PS3 players must press the square button. The timing is crucial here: Press the button a short moment after the shooter hits the ball.
- Let the wall advance: Since FIFA 13 there is the possibility to put the wall forward. You can do this with the right shoulder button. But be careful: some referees give a yellow card for this!
- Remove players from the wall: Use the A key (Xbox 360) or the X key (PS3) to remove a single player from the wall. The latter then storms towards the shooter and tries to block the shot. This is particularly effective for indirect free kicks, as your defender has a little more time to run on the ball.
