Filezilla error: econnrefused - you can do that
If you receive the error message "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server" in FileZilla, this is usually due to an incorrect configuration of your FTP connection. We'll show you how to fix it.
ECONNREFUSED in FileZilla - How to solve the problem
The "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server" message may appear in FileZilla when you connect to an FTP server. Unfortunately, the note does not contain any information about the cause of the error. That is why there are various possible solutions.
- First, make sure that you have entered the correct address for FTP access.
- If you use a firewall or a virus scanner on your PC, you should switch it off as a test. This also applies to Windows' own firewall. Then try to connect again. If this succeeds, you have to create an exception rule in the security software and also release the port used by the connection.
- An external firewall - such as that of a router - can also block the connection. You should check these and, if necessary, create an exception rule.
- If you want to establish the FTP connection to another PC, you should also check the firewall and virus scanner settings on this PC.
- Many problems with an incorrectly configured firewall can be avoided by establishing a passive instead of an active FTP connection. To do this, open your connection in the FileZilla server manager and select the "Passive" option in the "Transfer settings" tab.
- If possible, use an SFTP connection instead of an FTP connection. The corresponding setting can be found in the Server Manager in the "General" tab.
ECONNREFUSED - reconfigure network in FileZilla
A faulty network configuration in FileZilla can also trigger the "ECONNREFUSED" error. The best way to determine the correct settings is to use the network configuration wizard:
- In the FileZilla menu bar, click "Edit" and then "Network Configuration Assistant"
".
- First click on "Next" in the new window. Select "Passive (recommended)" as the standard transmission mode and make sure that the checkbox "Allow access to another transmission mode in case of failure" is set. Click on Continue".
- Select "Use the server's external IP address instead". Confirm with "Next".
- Place a checkmark next to "Obtain an external IP address from the following URL:" and make sure that the default value //ip.filezilla-project.org/ip.php is entered in the text field. Then click on the "Next" button.
- Check the "Ask operating system for port" option. Click "Next" again.
- You now have the option of checking your configuration with the "Test" button. After the test has been successfully completed, click "Next" one last time. Then close the wizard with "Finish".
