FileZilla: Establish SFTP connection - how it works
You can establish a secure connection to your server under FileZilla using SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol). We will show you how to do this here.
Connect to the server using FileZilla SFTP
In order to establish an SFTP connection, SSH access must be granted on your server. Most providers have activated the function by default.
- Start FileZilla on your computer.
- The "Server Manager" is located at the top left of the ribbon.
- Click here on "New Server".
- Now you can enter the data of your server. An SFTP address usually presented the name "sftp". For example, the address could be "sftp.meinserver.com".
- Enter the number "22" as the port. This is the standard port for SSH connections.
- At the point "Protocol:" set the option "SFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol".
- After you have entered your user name and password, you can log in to the server via "Connect".
This tip is for FileZilla 3.23. Another article will show you what you can do when the message "Critical error - connection failed" appears in FileZilla.
