Firefox: Error "ssl_error_ssl_disabled" - what to do?
The error code ssl_error_ssl_disabled is displayed in Firefox if the browser cannot access a page secured with SSL. In this practical tip, we explain how to fix the error.
Fix "ssl_error_ssl_disabled" error in Firefox
First, you should test whether the problem is specific to a particular website or in general. To do this, go to //weblogin.bu.edu/troubleshooting?cmd=ssl and start the test. If you do not receive an error message, there is probably a problem with the website you are trying to access. Otherwise, you can try the following solutions.
- In the Firefox address bar, type "about: config" (without the quotation marks). Then hit enter and click "I'll be careful, I promise!". Make sure that the entries "security.enable_ssl3" and "security.enable_tls" have the value "true". If this is not the case, change the value by double-clicking on the entry.
- If you use Firefox via a proxy connection, make sure that all protocols used are entered correctly. To do this, first click on "Advanced" in the settings, then on "Network" and then on "Settings ..." in the "Connection" area.
- A firewall you have installed may be blocking the SSL protocol. You should therefore ensure that no software limits Firefox access to the Internet.
- If you also receive a message that the SSL certificate has expired, although it should actually still be valid, check the set date and time on your PC and correct both if necessary.
- In some cases it is enough to clear Firefox's cache. You can read here how it works.
- A corrupt cert8.db file can also trigger the error. The file is located in the Firefox user folder and can be safely deleted. You can find your user folder by clicking on the menu button, then on the question mark and then on "Troubleshooting information". You can now display the profile folder in the "General information" area. Before you delete the cert8.db file, you should definitely quit Firefox.
