Firefox freezes - you can do that
Firefox freezes when the browser uses too many resources or a script doesn't work properly. In this case, there is a lot you can do to fix it. In this article, we explain exactly what you should do.
Firefox Freezes: The Most Common Causes and Solutions
In order for Firefox to run again, you must switch off the source of interference. In any case you should open the "Task Manager" with [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [Del] and close "Firefox". Then you should try to find the source of the error:
- If Firefox freezes after a long period of use, the first thing you should do is update. To do this, click on the question mark in the Firefox menu, as shown in the image on the right. Then select "About Firefox". Firefox will then automatically download the latest version and run the update.
- If Firefox freezes at startup and you are using session recovery, you should change a setting. Open the settings in the Firefox menu. Under "General" tick "Load tabs only when selected" below. Then try a restart.
- If you have installed addons in Firefox, you should start Firefox without them. Then you can check if Firefox continues to freeze. If not, one of the addons is the source of the error. To do this, go to the question mark in the Firefox menu and select "Restart Firefox without addons". If Firefox no longer freezes, you should switch off all addons and then reactivate them individually. The best way to determine which is the faulty addon.
- If Firefox crashes accidentally or, for example, while playing videos, hardware acceleration can be to blame. Go to the settings in the Firefox menu and select "Advanced". Now click on "General" and uncheck "Use hardware acceleration if available". If Firefox no longer freezes, it may be your graphics card driver's fault. You should then reinstall or update it.
- In many cases, deleting the history can also help. Warning: This will delete your entire history and cache. To do this, go to Settings and then Privacy. Under "Chronicle" then select "Delete latest chronicle". Put a check mark anywhere and delete the chronicle.
- To restore Firefox, type "about: support" (without the quotation marks) in the address bar. In the following window, click on "Restore Firefox". Firefox now imports your old data and restores itself.
- If that doesn't help, download Firefox again. Now back up your data. Then uninstall Firefox. After the uninstallation is complete, you can reinstall Firefox.
