Firefox: Change "New Tab" website
In Firefox you can change the website that appears as soon as you open a new tab. We'll show you how to set a new standard website, show an empty page or a search field in the new tab.
1. Standard website as "New Tab" in Firefox
By default, Firefox shows you the nine most recently visited pages when you open a new tab. Up to version 41.0.0 you can replace this with a standard website as follows. In newer versions of Firefox, only tips 2 and 3 work.
- Enter the "about: config" command in the Firefox address line. If necessary, confirm that you will be careful.
- Type "browser.newtab.url" in the search bar.
- Double click on the entry of the same name. An input window opens.
- Enter the Internet address that should be displayed from now on when you open a new tab. Finally confirm with "OK".
2. Blank page as new Firefox tab
- Open a new tab in the Firefox browser.
- Click the "Hide page for new tab" tile icon in the top right corner.
- If there is no symbol there, you can set up a standard page as described below, where you simply do not type anything into the input field.
- As of Firefox 41.0.1, click on the gear on the top right in the new tab and select "Show blank page" here.
3. Default search engine as a new tab in Firefox
You can also set up a page as a new tab that contains an input field of your standard search engine. The easiest way is to delete your history and not create a new one. In the picture gallery we also show you how to set a user-defined chronicle as a new tab for the standard search engine.
- Navigate to "Chronicle" via »Open menu«> »Settings«> »Data protection«
- Set the "never create" option there.
- Finally, click on "delete recently created chronicle ..." and remove "visited pages & download chronicle" here.
- If you restart Firefox, only one field of your search engine will appear in the new tab.
The description refers to Firefox 32. You can find out how to enlarge the display, switch off the sound and change the font in Firefox in further CHIP practical tips.
