Firefox is already running - what to do?
If you want to open Firefox and you are told that the browser is already running, you have to end the Firefox process manually. Read here how this works for the various operating systems.
Windows: Already running - Firefox process is still running
Of course, restarting your PC would help at this point. However, you can help yourself faster by going to Task Manager. This is due to an ongoing Firefox process.
- Call up the process overview in the Task Manager as described in the article.
- End the process with the name "firefox.exe".
Mac: End process on Mac
You can also manually end the Firefox process on Mac:
- Open the task manager. You can read how this works on the Mac in this practical tip.
- Mark "Firefox" there and click on "End Immediately"
Kill the Firefox process on Linux
- Open the terminal on your Linux system, eg with the key combination "Ctrl" + "Alt" + "T".
- Then enter the "kill" command in the terminal.
- You can find the process ID of the Firefox browser that is still running in "System monitoring" under "Processes". You can call up system monitoring in the terminal using the "top" command.
