Perform firmware update for TP-Link router: how it works
With a firmware update, you always provide your TP-Link router with the latest functions and security features. We will show you step by step how to download and install the new firmware.
Step 1: Download new firmware for TP-Link router
- First, go to your router and see what model it is. The exact name can usually be found on the bottom of the router.
- Now open the following TP-Link website and select the appropriate router model from the list.
- Check at the top right of the page whether the correct generation of the router has been selected (see picture). You will also find a note on your router stating whether your model is generation V1, V2, V3 or a newer version.
- If you have definitely selected the right model in the right generation, switch to the "Firmware" category below.
- If you scroll down a bit, you will find the download link for the latest firmware.
- Open the downloaded ZIP file and unzip the BIN file it contains.
Step 2: Install firmware update on TP-Link router
- Open a new tab in the browser and enter the IP address 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in the URL bar at the top.
- You will now end up at the web interface of the TP-Link router. If you have not changed the access data, enter "admin" for the user name and password.
- Change to the "System Tools" category and then select the "Firmware Upgrade".
- You can use the "Browse" button to select the previously unpacked BIN file.
- If you click the "Upgrade" button, the firmware is uploaded and installed.
TP-Link router: Important information for the firmware update
- The installation process takes only a few minutes. In the meantime, the connection to the Internet is lost. If the connection is not restored after several minutes, continue to wait and never pull the plug.
- TP-Link recommends resetting the router to the factory settings after the upgrade. To do this, open the web interface again and select the "Factory Defaults" category under "System Tool". Then you have to set up the router again.
