Fitness tracker in weight training: Which movements are recognized?
If you also want to use your fitness tracker for weight training, the data collected is often extremely inaccurate depending on the device. We show you what the fitness tracker can and cannot do.
Fitness tracker in weight training: what is measured?
- In addition to optical and bioelectric sensors, the motion sensors are one of the most important components of the fitness tracker.
- The acceleration sensors measure linear movements in three-dimensional space. From this, the fitness tracker can measure acceleration as speed.
- The gyroscope sensors record rotational movements. The spirit level on your smartphone, for example, also works with such sensors.
Fitness tracker: how sensible is it for strength sports?
- The sensors work the same in every fitness tracker. The difference between the trackers, however, results from how the recorded data from the sensors are ultimately interpreted.
- Simple fitness trackers even count when you clap your hands with the wrist band. Higher quality devices even differentiate between walking, running, cycling and climbing stairs.
- The data of most motion sensors are rather unusable for weight training. Depending on the device, movements with the arms are partially, completely or not counted as steps. You can only record your steps sensibly when warming up or during endurance training.
- With the optical sensors, on the other hand, you can monitor your heart rate relatively reliably. This function can make the fitness tracker interesting for strength athletes again. Bioelectric sensors can also determine the percentage of fat in the body.
Fitness tracker specifically for weight training: is there such a thing?
- There are now the first fitness trackers specifically designed for weight training. The Gymwatch currently costs around 100 euros and is worn on the arm or leg depending on the exercise.
- Using the free app, you have to tell the tracker which exercise you are about to start before training. The repetitions are then recorded. It also monitors whether you are doing the exercise too slowly or too quickly.
- From 2018, the Actofit should offer a successful alternative. The fitness tracker should also provide data on the force used and calorie consumption. With integrated GPS, the fitness tracker is also suitable for running or other activities. The price for the fitness tracker will probably be around 150 euros in Germany.
