Painting and painting tiles - the best tips
If you no longer like your old tiles, you don't necessarily have to lay new ones. Paint or paint the tiles, quickly give your bathroom or kitchen a new look without much effort - and without any dirt.
Which tiles can you paint?
The answer depends less on the type of tile. The decisive factor is rather the location: wall and ceiling tiles can easily be embellished with a new coat of paint. With floor tiles, however, the result will not be satisfactory for long. Paint is not up to the mechanical stress.
Beauty treatment for the tiles - you need that in terms of material
Above all, you need time. Painting or painting the tiles quickly won't work. You also need the right paint and tools.
- You should cover the floor well before painting or varnishing wall tiles. This is also possible with paper or cardboard, but painting fleece is more suitable.
- To mask out sockets and light switches, you need a wide masking tape.
- The tiles have to be roughened so that the paint lasts. Use fine sandpaper with 240 grit or abrasive fleece.

Prepare tiles for painting - how it works
Tiles have a smooth surface, which makes it difficult for the paint to adhere to them. Therefore they have to be roughened a little.
- Before you start, cleaning is the order of the day. The tiles must be clean and free of grease. Any mold must also be removed and treated before painting. You should also clean the joints.
- You should now repair any damage in the joints. After painting, the result becomes ugly. The joints are also painted.
- Now roughen the clean tiles with the sanding fleece. Work in paths so that you don't forget a tile.
- Fine dust is created by grinding. It is best to remove this with a soft cloth and then wipe the tiles and joints again with a damp cloth. The tiles have to be really clean and dust free.
- Let the surface dry well before you start painting.
- Tape the edges, sockets and light switches carefully.
Old tiles in a new shine - so it'll work
Most of the work is actually done. The painting itself is not difficult if you follow a few rules.
- Pour some of the paint into the tub. Wipe the roller a little on the corrugated surface.
- Paint the tiles quickly, evenly and in full lengths. Avoid long breaks. If you really need to stop working, don't do it while you're in the middle of a tile run. Finish the run to the next joint.
- If you have painted the entire surface, this layer must dry. After three hours, the paint is dry to the touch, but you cannot rework it yet.
- You should apply two coats to get a good and opaque result. After 12 hours, the first layer has dried so that you can paint over it.
- Proceed with the second layer of paint as with the first.
- Now the paint needs time. The varnish reaches its final resistance after about ten days. As long as you should not clean and avoid splashing water.
