Fortnite control: key assignment simply explained
Fortnite offers fast, colorful gameplay in both single and multiplayer - knowing the key assignment is essential to keep up. It is not only important, as in other Battle Royale games, that you know how to shoot and change your weapons, but at best you also build your cover or a base from different materials. You can read how this works on the PC and on the consoles in our practical tip.
Key assignment for Fortnite on PC and Mac
The control of Fortnite on the PC and on the Mac is very similar to that in most other shooter games. But there is also construction. In Fortnite, click on the three lines (menu) in the top right, then on the gear icon and switch to "Control" to view and change your button assignment. The most important keys are as follows:
- Move: W, A, S, D
- Jump: spacebar
- Aim: right mouse button
- Shoot: left mouse button
- Reload: R
- Select weapons / potion: Scroll 1-4 or mouse wheel
- Select component: F1-F4
- Select trap: F5
- Inventory: I
- Card: M or Tab
- Interact: E
Fortnite control: Play Station 4 controller
Since patch 3.5, the controller controls for PS4 and Xbox One have supported different configurations. You can not only reassign the buttons on the PS4 controller yourself, but you can also switch between the "Standard" and "Builder Pro" layouts. In both modes, you have to switch between combat and construction controls. While you switch the components under Standard, you can immediately select the right element with Builder Pro. In the settings you can switch to "Builder Pro" under "Control> Configuration" and control as follows:
- Move: left analog stick
- Jump: X
- Aim: right analog stick
- Shooting: R2
- Reload: square
- Choose weapons / potion: triangle
- Switch to construction mode / combat mode: circle
- Select component: shoulder buttons
- Choose trap: square
- Inventory: D-pad up
- Map: touchpad
- Interact: Quadrangle
Xbox controller: key assignment
On the Xbox controller, too, the controls are similar to most other shooters except for the switch between combat and construction mode. Just like with the PS4, you can change the configuration to "Builder Pro" in the "Control" settings in order to be able to select the components specifically. The standard assignment in this mode is as follows:
- Move: left analog stick
- Jumping: A
- Aim: LT
- Shooting: RT
- Reload: X
- Choose weapons / potion: Y
- Switch to construction mode / combat mode: B
- Select component: shoulder buttons
- Choose a trap: X
- Inventory: View button
- Map: D-Pad up
- Interact: X
