In this practical tip, we explain how you can easily convert photos into 3D models so that you can easily print them out with a 3D printer.
Step 1: convert photos into individual dots
First you need the program VisualFSM.
- In this program, import all the photos you have taken of the corresponding object. It is best to take several photos while moving around the object.
- Then click on the "Compute Missing Matches" button. Then you can press "Compute 3D Reconstruction".
- If everything looks good by then and you can see your 3D model well through the various points, click on the CMVS button. After the calculation process is finished, you can press the tab key in the program to display the 3D model.
Step 2: optimize the 3D model
Now you need the MeshLab program.
- Click here on "File"> "Open Project File" and import the project you just created.
- At the top right you will find a tool that allows you to remove excess areas. Use it to clean up your 3D model and smooth the edges if necessary.
- Save the project as a PLY file.
- Then go to "Filters"> "Point Set"> "Surface Reconstruction: Poisson". Select 12 as Octree Depth and 10 as Solver Divide and click "Apply".
- Then delete your point cloud. Now you have the finished 3D object.
- Now click on "Filters"> "Selection"> "Select non Manifold Edges" and click on the Remove tool again.
- Then navigate to "Filters"> "Texture"> "Parameterization + texturing from registered rasters". Select the highest possible resolution here, tick "UV stretching" and click "Apply".
- Finally save the finished model as an OBJ file. Now you can simply print it out.
