If you want to print images, the DPI value of your photos is very important. Read how to find out the value in this tip.
Calculate DPI - with this formula for image resolution
You can only calculate the resolution of the image in DPI (dots per inch) if you know the final image size. If you have decided on a size, use the following formula:
- DPI = (horizontal number of pixels in the photo x 2.54) / width of the photo
- One DPI corresponds to one pixel per inch.
- An inch is 2.54 cm.
- For example, if you have an image width of 35 cm and a horizontal number of pixels of 1600, your photo will have approximately 116 DPI.
Easier: Determine DPI using software
Load the image into a photo editing software and display the DPI value:
- IrfanView: Click on "Image"> "Information".
- Gimp: Open the tab "Image"> "Image properties".
