Measure FPS - how it works
In gaming, every game has a certain number of frames per second or frames per second (FPS). This practical tip shows you how to measure the FPS and determine this value exactly.
Measure FPS - it works with this software
In addition to gaming, you can also determine the FPS in videos. You can find out which software is suitable for this here:
- The best program to measure FPS is currently Fraps.
- With Fraps you can not only display the FPS, but also record videos and pictures in the game.
- However, since this program is a demo, the videos and images are limited and watermarked.
- However, the display of the FPS is not affected. This function is completely free.
- Start Fraps before starting the game. In the "FPS" tab you can adjust the display as you wish.
- By default, FPS number is displayed in the upper right corner of the screen.
- The higher the value, the smoother the game or video. The number should be between 50 and 60 FPS and remain constant so that the game or video is smooth.
- However, if the number moves well below the value, you should gradually reduce the settings for the graphic until you reach an acceptable value (at least 30 FPS). Further information on the optimal FPS value can be found in another practical tip.
- Tools like the Razer Cortex Game Booster can also improve game performance.
- Unless you notice any difference afterwards, it is advisable to buy a new graphics card so that the games run smoothly again.
This guide is based on Fraps 3.5 under Windows 7. In the next practical tip we will show you how you can replace your graphics card.
