Cut out in Gimp - how it works
Cropping images and objects in the open source image processing program Gimp is quite straightforward. The free Photoshop brother offers useful tools to separate objects or people from the rest of the image. we introduce them to you.
Cut out objects with Gimp - the most important tools
The screenshot shows the most important tools for cropping. From left to right in the top line: rectangular and elliptical selection, hands-free selection (lasso), magic wand and the magnetic scissors.
Cut out with the rectangular and elliptical selection
The easiest way to free objects with the rectangular or elliptical selection. However, this is only possible for objects with a corresponding shape, for example in football or a window.
- To do this, first click on the corresponding tool in the toolbox.
- Then start at a corner, hold down the left mouse button and move the cursor so that you drag the rectangle or ellipse around the desired object.
- Release the mouse button and then either cut, [Ctrl] + [X] or copy [Ctrl] + [C] to the clipboard and paste it into a new document or other image [Ctrl] + [V]. Finished.
Hands-free clipping with the Gimp-Lasso
The lasso is a good alternative to free up objects with irregular shapes or people in Gimp.
- Select the lasso symbol in the toolbox.
- Then left-click to place the first point around the object you want to cut out. Now walk a bit along the edge and set the next point.
- The points are always connected. So you go around the object bit by bit and release it. In order to get the object as a selection, you have to put the last point at the first.
- The object is now in the selection and can be copied and pasted as described above.
Gimp and the magic wand
This tool is only recommended for objects that have no color differences. The magic wand selects everything with a simple click in an area that has a similar color code around the clicked point. Therefore, the magic wand is only recommended for pictures with few and rather flat colors.
Cut out objects with the magnetic scissors
This tool selects along the edges of an object. In principle it works like the lasso, but it recognizes the edges itself. It is therefore a little more precise than simply selecting hands-free and is faster. At the end, simply left-click in the circled area and it is already in the selection. Now you can cut, copy and paste them.
