You can easily use your Fritzbox as an OpenVPN gateway. This practical tip shows you which settings are required for this.
Step 1: Preparations for the OpenVPN gateway under Firefox
Before you can get started, you have to make some preparations in the Fritzbox:
- First log into the Fritzbox (//fritz.box/) and release the UDP port 1194. This is required for OpenVPN. We have summarized detailed instructions for the port release of the Fritzbox for you here.
- You then have to assign a fixed IP to the Fritzbox.
- So that the Fritzbox can also be reached from the web, click on "Internet" in the Fritzbox on the left and select "MyFritz". Create a new account and you can access your Fritzbox from anywhere.
Step 2: Install and configure OpenVPN
- Download and install the OpenVPN package on your PC.
- After successful installation, open the command prompt with [Windows] + [R]. Switch to your desktop with "cd desktop".
- Then create the key file for OpenVPN using "Open VPN --genkey --secret static.key" followed by [Enter].
- Then copy this file into the OpenVPN folder. You can find this in the "Programs" folder.
- Then you have to configure the settings. Open the editor.
- Insert the following line there: "dev do ifconfig 10.8.0.1 10.8.0.2 secret static.key". Add "remote" at the top, followed by the address to your Fritzbox. You can find this in the Fritzbox under "Internet"> "Releases".
- Save this file under the name "clients". Under "File types" select "All files". Then add them to the OpenVPN directory.
Step 3: Set the firewall and start the OpenVPN gateway
- In order for OpenVPN to work properly, you must also enable UPD port 1194 here. You can find detailed instructions in this practical tip.
- You can now start OpenVPN by right-clicking on the "config" file in the program folder of OpenVPN and selecting "Start Open VPN on this config file".
- Note: You must perform this action as an administrator, otherwise an error message will appear.
