Set FritzBox encryption - how it works
With the widely used FritzBox, you can set up encryption in just a few steps. This protects your WLAN network from unwanted data thieves.
WLAN: Which FritzBox encryption is the right one?
In addition to no encryption, WPA, WPA / WPA2 and only WPA2 are also available. We give you a brief overview of which is the most secure encryption and what distinguishes it from the other methods.
- Unencrypted: You should never use this setting. This makes it easy for data thieves to read your private data. You could also be held responsible for illegal activity if someone uses your WiFi network for it.
- WPA is the successor to WEP. This was classified as unsafe and therefore significantly improved. But WPA is also no longer up to date.
- WPA2 is currently the most secure encryption. The successor to WPA is considered to be very secure and should therefore be set as standard for you.
- You should only set WPA / WPA2 mixed if there are problems with devices that do not support WPA2.
Set FritzBox encryption in just a few steps
The FritzBox is particularly user-friendly. You have therefore set the encryption in a few steps:
- First open your FritzBox interface in any browser. Please note that your computer must be connected to the FritzBox via WLAN or with a LAN cable.
- You may first have to enter your FritzBox password.
- In the menu on the left, select "WLAN" and then "Security".
- You can then enter your desired encryption under "WLAN mode". It is best to set WPA2 here.
- Enter your encryption password under "WLAN network key". This should be at least 20 characters, ideally mixed from numbers and letters. Make sure you follow our tips for a secure password.
- Then don't forget to save your entry by clicking on "Apply".
