Fritzbox vs Speedport - router in comparison
Fritzbox vs. Speedport - both routers are considered safe and popular. In this practical tip we compare the functions of both devices.
Fritzbox - strong router from AVM
The Berlin company AVM has been offering the Fritzbox, a power pack router, for years.
- The latest generation of the Fritzbox comes with four network connections, all of which have the latest Gigabit LAN function. That means even faster surfing at around 1, 000 megabits per second.
- You can achieve even higher transmission rates with the VDSL connection.
- Practical: Thanks to the two antennas, up to two WLAN networks can be set up. Both the n-standard with 2.4 GHz function, which is advantageous for older devices, is used, as well as the fast WLAN standard with around five GHz, which should benefit the newer devices.
- Both digital and analog telephones can be connected to the Fritzbox. A DECT base is also built in, so that you can connect cordless telephones to the Fritzbox.
- An advantage for printers or USB hard drives: The Fritzbox offers two USB 2.0 ports, with which you can use the devices connected there via the WLAN.
- If you don't have a hard drive at hand, you can also use the Fritzbox as a rather small network storage. The router comes with 512 MB of memory.
- Unfortunately, the power consumption increased a little compared to the last Fritzbox, but devices are sent to the so-called "sleep mode" when they are inactive. You can easily configure a night shutdown for the Fritzbox in the settings.
Speedport - Telekom's router
If you sign a contract with Telekom, you will usually receive a Speedport router.
- The router, which is often offered by Telekom, comes with almost identical specifications as the Fritzbox.
- The Speedport also has two WLAN antennas, but the transmission rate here is significantly lower than with the Fritzbox.
- You can also connect various telephones here.
- Unfortunately, security leaves something to be desired: The standard WiFi password of the Speedport can be easily cracked. Therefore, you should definitely change the Speedport WLAN password manually.
- Annoying: Expert settings, such as those available with the Fritzbox, are completely missing in the router menu. For example, you cannot obtain detailed information about LAN or WLAN or change the WLAN channel.
Conclusion: Fritzbox vs. Speedport
- Both routers don't take much and have almost the same functions. However, experts cannot make any advanced settings for the Speedport.
- Ultimately, it depends on you: If you need an integrated network memory and want to make detailed changes to your network, you should use the Fritzbox. Otherwise the Telekom Speedport should also suffice.
In the next practical tip, you will learn how to configure the Speedport router and configure all the important settings of the Fritzbox.
