Frutarians: The vegan life for advanced users

Being vegan is nothing special anymore, especially in big cities. If you want to go one step further, you will become a Frutarian. In this article we explain what this is all about.

Frutarian diet

As the name suggests, Frutarians are people who feed exclusively on fruit.

• How strictly the diet is followed depends heavily on the personal beliefs of the people.
• For example, some eat only those fruits that would naturally fall off a plant so that they would not damage it.
• Others understand the word "fruit" in the botanical sense and thus also include beans.
• Another group of Frutarians only feed on raw fruits with a high sugar content and even exclude foods that are strictly vegetable fruits, such as tomatoes or avocados.
• The reason for frutarism is often ideological or religious. For example, followers of Jainism want to avoid doing harm to other living things as much as possible. For example, since harvesting rice would irreversibly kill the plant, you should avoid eating such foods.
• Some frutarians want to return to a pre-agricultural time when people gathered their food.
• Frutarians often also expect health benefits from this diet.
• Frutarism is an extreme form of veganism. Therefore, no meat, fish or other animal products are consumed. However, in addition to fruits, a vegan also consumes grains, nuts, seeds, soy products and other plant-based foods.

Fruitarism is so healthy

Even though many Frutarians eat this way because they are convinced that they are doing something good for their body, science thinks differently here.

• For example, the majority of the national food institutes warn against eating as long-term as adults. Children, adolescents and pregnant women or sick people should completely refrain from this.
• A frutaristic diet is extremely high in vitamins and fiber, but in the long run it would lead to serious deficiency symptoms.
• For example, Frutarians generally consume far too little calcium and zinc, as these are rarely found in fruits. This could be compensated for if the chosen form of fruitarism also contains nuts and seeds.
• In addition, it is impossible to eat only the daily iron and protein requirements with fruit without consuming enormous amounts of fruit. This would in turn trigger weight gain because you would have to consume large amounts of calories.
• Also important fatty acids are not to be found in fruits, just like the essential vitamin B12.
• As a Frutarian, you would consume large amounts of fructose. This can lead to impaired blood sugar and pancreatic values ​​and even trigger diabetes.
• Especially in countries in the northern hemisphere, the selection of fruits is very small, especially in winter.
• Therefore, even if it may work for a short period of time or appear to do your body good, you should not only eat fruits in the long term.
• If you choose to do so, it is essential to test your blood levels regularly, monitor your weight and consult with your doctor.
