National football team: That's why the jerseys are black and white
Despite the black, red and gold national colors, the German national team always wears black and white jerseys. In this practical tip, we will tell you what the colors of Germany and this color selection are all about.
Germany soccer jerseys: why are all black and white?
The first German international match was played against Switzerland in 1908. Even then, the national football team's jersey was already black and white.
- At that time, Germany did not exist today, but the German Empire. The area consisted of many previously autonomous states, including the Kingdom of Bavaria or the Grand Duchy of Baden.
- More than half of the area belonged to Prussia, so that many citizens of the German Empire saw themselves not only as Germans but also as Prussians. The flag of Prussia was black and white.
The team: black-white instead of black-red-gold
- The colors of Prussia were the inspiration for the first jerseys of the German national team. Not much has changed over time.
- Color only came into play for the first time with the EM 1988 jersey. The white jerseys were given a clear coat of paint in black, red and gold.
- Since then, almost every EM and WM has included some color. For the 2018 World Cup, the team's jersey will be a little more colorless, instead of black-red-gold there will only be black and white again.
- The foreign jersey is an exception: This year, for example, this is green - a very special eye-catcher.
