If you have a radio key for your car, you should shield it effectively for your safety. In this article, we show you how to best do this.
Shield radio key - why it is important
Radio keys are practical, but they also increase the risk of theft. With modern radio keys, you don't even have to press a button to open the car. It is enough if you approach the car door. Starting the vehicle also does not require a key in the ignition lock.
- However, this only works as long as you are close to the car. As soon as you leave the vehicle, the radio connection between the key and the electronics of the car is interrupted.
- However, the radio waves of your key can be extended with simple devices. Thieves only have to bring a so-called key scanner near their radio key. It is enough to place such a device in front of your front door if your radio key is in the hall, for example.
- Another device, a car scanner, is placed near the vehicle. This is how the thief establishes a radio link between the key and the car. The car thief now has access to your vehicle and can even start it.
- To prevent this, you should protect your radio key and even shield it if necessary.
More security: How to protect a radio key
With simple measures, you can protect your radio key against unauthorized access. A simple measure is to store the key within your four walls.
- It is best to be at least three meters from the front door, but also from all your windows.
- The saucepan method is very simple. Put your radio key in a saucepan and put the lid on it. So the signal cannot be passed on.
- You can just as well keep your key in a key safe. These effectively shield radio waves.
- If you are on the move and are near your parked vehicle, aluminum foil protects the key against unauthorized access. To do this, wrap the key in several layers of aluminum foil.
- Special protective covers that shield radio keys are also convenient.
