Charge the Galaxy S8 wirelessly - how it works
The Galaxy S8 supports inductive charging, i.e. wireless charging of the smartphone. We show you in this practical tip how exactly this works.
Charge the Galaxy S8 wirelessly - what is it?
Qi Wireless Charging technology is behind the wireless charging.
- Qi is the Chinese word for life energy.
- The charging works via electromagnetic induction.
- The energy is not transmitted via a cable, but rather by means of electromagnetic fields.
- There is a transmitter (the charging station) and a receiver (the mobile phone).
- It is very advantageous with this type of charging that cell phones and chargers from different manufacturers are compatible with each other.
- There are two main problems: Many current smartphones are made from a unibody metal housing, which means that they are not Qi-capable. In addition, Qi charging has been very slow so far and did not come close to the charging speeds of the popular FastCharge, which is only available via cable. In addition, the smartphone often has to be moved only minimally to interrupt the charging process.
- At the same time, there are conflicting opinions as to whether inductive charging is not harmful to people. However, the principle has been used in electric toothbrushes for many years - without lasting physical impairment of humans.
Charge the Galaxy S8 wirelessly - Samsung's approach
Samsung launched an inductive charging station together with the Galaxy S8.
- This also supports FastCharge for the first time, eliminating one of the major disadvantages of Qi loading so far.
- This means that wireless charging no longer differs from wired charging, at least in terms of speed.
- The design of the charging station also allows you to continue using the smartphone while charging. This happens through the angled loading area.
- At the same time, this prevents charging from being interrupted by the device accidentally slipping.
- The MSRP of the charging station was € 79 at the time of the presentation, but it is now available on the Internet for less than € 60.
Charge the Galaxy S8 wirelessly - for whom is it worth it?
So who should pay the extra charge of up to € 60 to enjoy wireless charging?
- In principle, the purchase of the charging station is particularly worthwhile for people who are annoyed by the eternal cable tangle on the desk.
- The advantage of Samsung's charging station, as mentioned above, is that there is no loss of speed when charging, and there is no risk of interrupting charging by slightly moving the device.
- In addition, the charging station on the desk cuts a good figure and looks very futuristic.
- With the exception of the cables that are no longer required, they offer hardly any added value. Especially people who travel a lot will hardly have anything from the Qi shop, after all, this has so far been limited to stationary charging.
