Game-over-screen in Super Mario Odyssey: that's why there is none
Nintendo has confirmed that Super Mario Odyssey doesn't have a game over-screen for the Nintendo Switch. In this article, we explain why the developers made this decision.
Super Mario Odyssey does it differently
- The new Super Mario for Switch breaks with traditions and old conventions.
- It is the first sandbox-style 3D Mario adventure since Super Mario Sunshine in 2002 and brings new features.
- In Super Mario Odyssey, Mario can throw his hat and take control of enemies and objects.
- The worlds are also designed differently than in the predecessors and offer, among other things, New Donk City, a city that is modeled on New York.
- In addition, there will be no life in the game as known from previous Mario games.
No game over screen in Super Mario Odyssey
- Another tradition that has been abolished is the game over screen.
- The screen that was displayed when all lives were lost in the classic games in the Mario series is no longer used in any form.
- Instead, coins are withdrawn from the player. Whoever blesses the time loses ten coins in Super Mario Odyssey.
- If you have less than ten coins, you can simply continue playing after a breakdown.
- The new mechanics should ensure that you can continuously explore the world as a player without being torn out of the game.
- The game-over screen dates from the era of arcade machines, in which video games started and is less and less used for games for the console.
Super Mario Odyssey will be released on October 27, 2017 for the Nintendo Switch. In the next practical tip, we will show which controllers you can use in connection with the different modes for the switches.
