Selling a used laptop: the best tips
If you want to sell your used laptop, you should first of all delete all your data from the hard drive. Cleaning the laptop is also a priority for a successful sale. We will therefore show you what you should pay attention to when selling your laptop.
Clean the laptop thoroughly
- First of all, you should clean your laptop thoroughly. Remove dirt and grime from the screen and keyboard. Then you should also clean the surface of the laptop.
- If you take care of the cleaning properly, this can also bring you more success in sales. This is because the device looks much higher quality and newer. If you sell accessories for the laptop, you should also clean them.
- In any case, make sure to handle your used laptop carefully and, if in doubt, use a special kit to clean your notebook.
Delete all data completely
- It is important that in a further step you delete all the data on the laptop. To do this, format entire hard drives if you have saved the data elsewhere or if you want to remove the data anyway. Also remember to regularly empty the trash and delete individual data manually.
- A lot of data is difficult to remove manually. Therefore, you should use a special program. Programs such as the CCleaner are ideal for this. These are usually available free of charge and can be used on a PC or laptop.
- In addition, you should also remove the operating system or at least reinstall it. If there is particularly sensitive data on the laptop, it is worth removing the hard drive from the laptop. You can then either offer your laptop without a hard drive or install a new hard drive in the laptop. However, keep in mind that these steps are only possible if you don't want to sell the laptop under warranty.
Offer your laptop properly
You can offer your laptop either offline or online. We show you the main differences:
- Offline: First find a suitable dealer. Most of the time, you should contact buying and selling stores that sell electrical equipment. They either buy the device directly from you or take it on commission. You should make sure that you compare prices first, so you make sure you don't sell the laptop below value.
- Online: You can also offer your laptop on well-known websites such as eBay. It is only important here that you take your own photos of the device and expose possible defects. Fill the display with a lot of information about the device so that every potential buyer can get a good idea of your laptop. This is the only way to ensure that both sides are satisfied in the end.
Tip: If there is no buyer for your laptop or if you can no longer offer individual parts of the laptop for sale, then these parts often have to be disposed of. However, there are special guidelines to be followed when disposing of electrical parts. We have put these together for you in another practical tip.
