Detect fake Amazon emails
This practical tip shows you how to recognize fake spoof and phishing emails that are said to be sent by Amazon as such and how you should react to them.
Detect spurious Amazon emails
There are many features that you can use to distinguish spurious Amazon emails from real ones. You can find an example of a fake email in the picture gallery.
- Real Amazon emails always have the sender "@ amazon.de" or "@ amazon.com". Any other sender means that it is a forgery. But be careful: Sender addresses can also be falsified.
- If you are an Amazon customer, Amazon knows your name and gender and will always address you correctly. "Dear customer" indicates a fraud email.
- Spelling and grammatical errors are usually a sign of a fraudulent email.
- Amazon only links to websites that end in ".amazon.de". Fraudsters will try to cheer you on other links.
- Amazon is very discreet. If you are asked in a mail for personal data or even your password, it is certainly a fake mail.
- Here, Amazon itself gives tips for identifying fake emails.
- If you are unsure whether it is an authentic Amazon email, contact customer service or call the customer hotline.
The correct behavior for fake Amazon emails
If you receive a fake Amazon email, there are a few rules to keep in mind:
- If you can identify the alleged Amazon email as a forgery before opening it, it is best not to open the message at all.
- If you have already opened the mail, under no circumstances click on links in the mail text.
- Do not reply to the mail either; otherwise the fraudster has found out that it is an actively used email address.
- If the mail has an attachment, do not open it. It is very likely to contain malicious software.
- Report the scam email to Amazon immediately by forwarding it to " " or sending it as an attachment. This allows Amazon to investigate and prevent fraud as quickly as possible.
- You will also receive an answer from amazon.com, which - unfortunately in English - will confirm whether it is a fake e-mail (see picture gallery).
- Then delete the fake Amazon mail.
