Fake telecom bills are in circulation every now and then. This practical tip shows you how to identify a counterfeit and what you can do in case of doubt.
Detect fake telecom bill
Telekom warns of bogus invoices that are distributed via email. These can contain viruses or refer to harmful websites. The following tips will help you to unmask well-made fakes.
- Telekom of course only sends its invoice to customers. The invoices will only be emailed if you have specified this in the contract.
- If you click on the sender's name, you will see the sender's email address. For example, this is " " and is clearly not from Telekom.
- If you are not the only addressee, you can be sure that the email is fake. Telekom does not send mass mails and thereby reveals the email addresses of its customers.
- Telekom always addresses your private customers with their full customer names. "Dear customer" indicates a forgery.
- If you hold the mouse pointer over a link, the destination address is displayed in the browser. If neither "telekom" nor "t-online", "t-mobile" or "telekom-dienste" is immediately before the ".de", it is not a telecom URL. Telekom will of course only save your invoice on its own URL.
- Do not be fooled: Even if some links link to telecom sites, this does not confirm the authenticity of the invoice.
- If the invoice or customer number is given, compare it with your documents. You can find your customer number in your contract or view it online in the customer center.
When in doubt about the authenticity of the Telekom bill
If you doubt the authenticity of your telecom bill, it is best to do the following:
- Do not open an attachment and do not follow any link in the email. It is best not to even load the graphic content of the mail.
- Instead, log in to the Telekom customer center via a secure connection with your T-Online number or email address.
- There you can now see your customer number, invoice number and previous invoices.
- This practical tip describes what you can do if you forget your Telekom password.
- In the Telekom FAQ you will find further information on counterfeit Telekom emails and Telekom invoices.
