Defrost and clean the freezer compartment - how it works
To free up space, you should defrost and clean your freezer regularly. Here's how to do it best.
Step 1: Defrost the freezer compartment before cleaning
The more ice adheres to the walls of the freezer compartment, the less space there is and the higher the energy consumption. You should therefore defrost the freezer compartment at least once a year, and more frequently if necessary.
- It is easiest when it has freezing temperatures outside. Then you can simply store your frozen food outside in a (freezer) bag.
- Otherwise, you should store the contents of the freezer compartment with neighbors, for example, or use it up completely before defrosting. However, never leave frozen food unrefrigerated for too long and freeze thawed food again - pathogenic germs can form or multiply.
- For the actual defrosting, first switch off the device. With many combination devices, you can also defrost the ice compartment separately from the refrigerator. Otherwise, it makes sense to clean the refrigerator at the same time.
- You can partially break off large pieces of ice by hand. Be careful not to damage anything, especially the cooling rods.
- You can simply melt the rest of the ice or speed up the process with a hair dryer. Provide receptacles and cloths to hold the melt water.
Step 2: clean the defrosted freezer
Cleaning the freezer is quick after defrosting.
- Warm water with a dash of dishwashing detergent is sufficient. You do not need aggressive special cleaning agents.
- After cleaning, you should wipe again with clear water.
- Then allow the freezer compartment to dry completely or wipe it off with a dry cloth before switching on the cooling again. Otherwise, new ice forms immediately.
- The correct temperature of the freezer is important when commissioning afterwards.
