If you have torn a banknote, the worry is often great. However, a damaged or torn banknote is usually not a waste of money. Instead, you can simply have the damaged banknote replaced.
Torn banknote: Exchange in the bank
If you have accidentally torn a bill, it is not a problem because it is still an acceptable form of payment as long as about half of the bill is still intact. However, traders can refuse to accept the bill if you want to pay with it. However, you can have the banknote exchanged in your bank.
- To do this, bring all parts of the bill to your bank.
- Explain your concerns directly at the information so that your torn banknote can be exchanged.
- Your house bank is not necessarily obliged to exchange the bill. If you want to play it safe or if the replacement has been refused, read on in the next section.
Have banknotes replaced at the Deutsche Bundesbank
Since private banks are not obliged to exchange torn banknotes, you may have to contact the Deutsche Bundesbank to have your banknote replaced free of charge:
- To do this, you must submit this reimbursement request to the Deutsche Bundesbank to exchange one or more torn banknotes.
- Send your bank note along with the application. It is best to pack this in a transparent bag and send in all parts that are still left of the banknote. At least half of the bill must be present for your application to be approved and the money transferred. In addition, the certificate must not come from criminal business.
- Send the letter together with the form and the euro note to this address: Deutsche Bundesbank; Hegelstrasse 65; H 313; 55122 Mainz.
- The amount of the bill will be transferred to your account at no additional cost.
- Note: The Deutsche Bundesbank does not only replace torn banknotes in this way. Charred, painted and washed out notes are also reimbursed.
