Since GEMA is not to be trifled with, you should familiarize yourself well with the fees for playing music in advance. Even if you yourself think that you have nothing to do with GEMA, it may be that the collecting society for music sees it completely differently.
GEMA and its countless tariffs
When it comes to music, GEMA understands no fun at all and in case of doubt you will be brought to court quicker than you can sing, because the collecting society is also responsible for singing songs in public. If you don't register with GEMA in advance, a bit of music can quickly become expensive.
- Often, the defendants are not aware of any guilt, because the collecting society also strikes every now and then on occasions when nobody would have expected it. Regardless of whether only pianos are set up in a public place or whether cheerful folk songs are gossiped at the weekly senior gathering in the country - GEMA always wants to be there.
- Basically, when playing, performing or singing, the question is whether it takes place in a private setting or whether it is public. As soon as it could be even a hint of public, the collecting society is on board and would like to have the corresponding fees from you.
- You can read a little more about what is meant by the so-called "public reproduction" of music in section 15 paragraph 3 of the so-called copyright law.
- Otherwise, it is definitely recommended to look at the GEMA website for the various opportunities and, if necessary, to download an appropriate registration form so that you are on the safe side.
- With the help of the GEMA tariff calculator, you can find out the costs you will incur in advance.
If you are unsure whether or what you have to register, it is best to contact GEMA customer service in advance.
